Lori Wenger, School Nurse 679-9502 or lori.wenger@tsd.org
Brandi Thompson, School Health Office Assistant (SHOA) 679-9504 or brandi.thompson@tsd.org
- Please keep students home that have a 101 temperature or higher until they are fever free for 24 hours without analgesics (Tylenol/Ibuprofen).
- Please keep students home with upper GI (vomiting) for 24 hours after the last episode.
- If students have been diagnosed with Strep they can return after being on the prescribed medication for 24 hours.
- Please don’t send medication in backpacks/pockets in case they should fall out and into the hands of younger students. Bring medication/s along with completed forms to the the SHOA or School RN so they can be stored securely in the Health Office.
- We gladly accept new and gently used sweat pants (both boys and girls) sizes 5-12. New socks and underwear for both boys and girls sizes 5-10 are very much appreciated as well.
- If your student has more significant health needs (asthma, diabetes, anaphylaxis, seizures, etc), please contact our health office staff. Mrs. Brandi (school health office assistant-SHOA), or Mrs. Lori (school RN) are happy to help obtain health care plans for school support/medication administration.
Medication Procedure
Thompson School District, in accordance with Colorado State Law, has enacted the following Medication Procedure:
All prescription medication dispensed from the health office (by a person who has been trained by the School Nurse to do so) must:
-
-
- be in an appropriate pharmacy labeled container.
- be accompanied by a "Permission for Medication" form that includes the health care provider (doctor) signature, dispensing information, and parent signature. (Completed "Permission for Medication" forms faxed from the health care provider will be accepted.) This form can be found by clicking Forms on the left navigation bar.
- In accordance with state mandates, medication must be given prior to the medication expiration date. No expired medications can be accepted by or administered at school.
-
NOTE: Over-the-counter medication given by health office staff must be treated like a prescription medication.
Heads Up!
With the change in the weather, the hats came out, and now is a good time for parents to be on the alert for head lice. Head lice are a common childhood affliction. All places where children get together are places where head lice can be transferred. Clean hair and home are no guarantee that head lice will not find your child. Periodically check your child's hair for nits (eggs), which can usually be seen long before lice can be located. Nits are small white to tan particles found in the hair that look a lot like dandruff, except that dandruff is loose and can be brushed from the hair, whereas nits are attached to the hair shaft and cannot be removed easily. Lice are very small (flea sized) and do not like light, so they can be hard to find. If your child is experiencing itching of the scalp or you see something in the hair and are not sure what it is, feel free to stop by the health office and allow staff to check with you.
Students are no longer excluded from school. Re-check is needed in 7 days to ensure complete removal. Notes are NOT sent home to the entire classroom/school unless there are multiple reported cases in a class. This is a privacy/confidentiality issue and won't be shared unless the school nurse deems it necessary. Thank you for your understanding. What should I do if we find lice/nits on my child?
- Use over the counter lice treatment.
- Check siblings/family members and perform treatment if necessary.
- Wash all bedding, pillows, stuffed animals, etc that could have contact with the affected child. If the item is too large to be washed (big stuffed animals), store in an airtight plastic bag for 14 days.
- Please report to the school health office at 970-679-9504 (confidential voice mail) so that measures may be taken at school to ensure classroom items are washed and track cases. Health office personnel will recheck 7 days from the report.
- Recheck for nits/lice 7 days after initial treatment. If present, please repeat above. If not present, no further action is required

Vision and Hearing Screenings
Frequently Asked Questions:
- When are V&H screenings done?
- This varies, but is generally done within the first month of school.
- When would the school nurse contact me regarding my student's screenings?
- If your student's hearing and vision are within the normal parameters set by the State of Colorado, you would not hear from the school.
- Vision: If your student's vision met the district criteria after 1st screening and a recheck, the school nurse would then complete a referral form.
- Hearing: If your student was unable to hear some of the tones, a recheck would be completed. If they were still unable to hear at one of the tested decibels, they would be referred to the district audiologist. Any hearing referrals would come from the district's audiologist.
- Should I take my student to an eye or ear doctor?
- If you suspect your child is not seeing or hearing properly, taking him/her to a specialist is an excellent idea. You know your student better than anyone else.
Any questions? Please don't hesitate to contact the health office at 970-679-9504.
